Word Puzzles

he most important clue to solving any mystery, word riddle or puzzle is patience. Give yourself all the time you need to solve any puzzle you are working on. Most of us work on puzzles in spare time over a series of days. If a puzzle starts to "get to you", do not be afraid to lay it down to come back to it later or after a good nights sleep. Then when you return and your fresh mind starts solving clues right and left, the thrill of solving a word puzzle will come back to and you will be right back on track having tons of fun with word based puzzles.

They even make great party games to help people get started thinking about them of the gathering or as a "getting to know you" activity. However, you use them, you will be the one having the most fun making puzzles, printing them and then watching as others try to solve them. But if you do not "stump" them, do not worry.

The ways you can use puzzles that are customized and printable are many. Think of how much it would be to bring an easy and colorful crossword puzzle to a child's birthday party and all of the clues are things like "What is Amber's favorite color?" and "Whose picture is on Amber's lunch box?" Of course Amber would get all of the answers right but her friends will have a great time completing the puzzle.

Number Puzzles

The perfect number puzzle will be similar to a word puzzle in that it is portable and something you can pick up anytime and tinker with. It should be a challenge so you do not just finish it off like an exercise and you occasionally lose because they are just hard enough to give you some fight but still it is possible to win if you are clever enough. It also should be a puzzle that has enough substance that you can continue it over many playings and that you can stop and start again from time to time so you extend the enjoyment of that puzzle over hours or days.

Number Fill In Puzzles

If crossword puzzles are the classic example of a word fill in puzzle, then the game of Soduku would stand out as a classic puzzle where you fill in the numbers to complete a 9X9 grid. The rules of Soduku are simple but therein lies the challenge. That 9X9 grid is broken down into four sections 3X3 in size. Your job is to complete the grid filling in numbers between one and nine in each of the blank boxes. You must complete the rows and columns completely but there are two challenges. One is that some of the numbers will come already filled in. The second is you cannot repeat a number either up and down or horizontally.

Math Puzzles

One of the classic math puzzles is Sudoku. The game is a study in simplicity and yet tremendously challenging and fun. On the surface, the idea that you just have to organize numbers on horizontal and vertical grids without duplication seems simple and straightforward. But each game takes on different levels of complexity when some of the blocks come already filled in and you have to learn to incorporate your number layout scheme with what is already there. It is not uncommon for a player to become totally absorbed in the mental exercise of manipulating numbers to solve the puzzle. That absorption is a classic case of allowing the joy of math to take you over for the sheer fun of it.

Make A Crossword Puzzle

Many teachers utilize crosswords to make their lessons more fun also. It is far easier to get a student engaged in learning "trivia" facts about history, science or math by embedding those educational tidbits in a crossword puzzle than by just lecturing and testing. If you are a teacher or you home school, you may want to make your own crossword puzzles too. And there is no reason you cannot, especially with the aid of some very helpful software packages or internet sites.

Logic Puzzles

Science tells us that much about how our brains go about solving problems like this is a mixture of the logical machinery of organized thinking and the intuitive ability to think "from the gut" to know when information is important for the solution and when it is unnecessary distraction. In most puzzles, such "rabbit trails" are intuitionally put there to make it more fun sorting out the answers. By taking pleasure in logical games, we naturally take that skill into life and take just as much pleasure solving life's puzzles as we do in playing mental games with logical word puzzles in our leisure time.

Scientists tell us that doing puzzles that challenge our mental abilities do more than just give us a good "brain tease". They make us mentally stronger, more agile and better able to solve problems in our daily lives. So we get the double value that each time we take on a new level of complexity in the form of a puzzle because every time we challenge our minds, that's fun. But the second level of value is that our minds literally get smarter because we learn new problem solving skills even when we are not trying to learn.
